THE AFRICAN RISING MOVEMENT EXTENDS INVITATION FOR TOGO SOLIDARITY MOVEMENT

Dear Members of the Civil Society,

I am extending a cordial invitation to you to attend Togo Solidarity Forum to discuss the political situation of Togo and how Pan-African civil society movements and activists in Ghana can support the people of Togo in their quest for democracy.
The event will take on Saturday the 18th of August 2018 at 10.00 am at the Moremi Initiative located at One Cocoa Street, East Legon.

Togo has been under dictatorial rule at the hands of the Gnassingbe family since 1967, making it the oldest military regime in Africa. Eyadema, notorious as one of Africa’s most brutal dictators ruled until his death in 2005 and was succeeded by his son Faure Gnassingbe, who, despite losing the public vote that same year, came to power by military force in the bloodiest presidential election in Togo’s history which left at least 500 people dead according to the United Nations.

Since then Faure Gnassingbe has run in the 2010 and 2015 elections and continues to run a violent and oppressive regime. He is the only president in the ECOWAS region to serve a third term, and so violates the 1992 constitution, which encompasses term limits and two-round elections.

On August 19th, 2018, following the call of the PNP party to protest for the reinstatement of the 1992 constitution which encompasses term limits, the people of Togo have embarked on a revolutionary struggle to demand the end of dictatorship in Togo. Exactly a year from that uprising, the Africans Rising movement is inviting all members of the civil society in Ghana to join a solidarity form to engage the citizens on Togo on ways Africans can support their struggle for democracy and justice.
Despite the geographical and demographic proximity and historic ties between the two countries, Ghanaian media, political and civic leaders are often unaware of the dire political situation of Togo. The event will foster effective networking and collaboration between Togolese and Ghanaian activist for a shared experience that can support the plight of the Togolese people.

I look forward to having you in the audience. Feel free to contact me if you have any question. To confirm your attendance, please RSVP at farida@africans-rising.org or 057-029-1481.

We will truly appreciate if you can join us as this event is global effort to raise awareness on the first anniversary of Togo uprising.

Sincerely,
Farida Bemba Nabourema,
Engagement & Collaboration Coordinator
