ASSOL WEEK CELEBRATION, HISTORICALLY TUMULTUOUS.

ASSOCIATION OF STUDENTS OF LANGUAGES, UEW-K, CELEBRATE WEEK IN GRAND STYLE.

The students of languages in the university of education, Kumasi campus, marked their department week celebration with serious academic exercises and sports. The department is made up of students of English language and students of Arabic  education. The languages department is the youngest since it was started in 2013.
Students in the department celebrate their department week annually to demonstrate to the world, the prospects of languages education. This years' week celebration which started on 21st march, 2017 witnessed a very tumultuous participation. More than 500 students were in a public lecture organized by the students to commence the celebration of the week . This was a platform where students discussed various issues of national essence. Gender issues and corruption were largely discussed by students, a very rich occasion I personally witnessed. Indeed, this is what is required of our educational institutions to enable students contribute their roles in arresting emerging national development challenges in Ghana.

Today, 23/03/17, Thursday, marked another magnanimous occasion as the students demonstrated their talents in sports. Various sports games were played including football, oware, cards, tennis among others.

Speaking to the general Secretary of the association, Mr Maxwell Nyuweer, he expressed his joy for the full participation of members and says the association has so many programs on board to enable members of the department feel the relevance of the department of which today's event is just one. He admonished all to take any opportunity available to developing their full potentials. When asked how the executives are able to secure funding for such a lovely program, the secretary lamented over the difficulty in securing sponsorship from corporate institutions, limiting them to the use of meager amount paid as dues by members. He however showed his joy on the commitment of members to the association as more than eighty percent of members have paid their dues this year.

The event attracted so many people to the park of the University and the euphoria was simply amazing. While others were playing various games, others were dancing.

Speaking to Mr. S.K Amekudzi who is a member of the association and doubles as SRC presidential candidate on the future of the event, he indicated that he uses the occasion to fraternise with his friends. When asked what plans he has for the department and SRC in general, he stated clearly that he is going to bring in corporate institutions to make such occasions remarkable. Again, he added that steps will be taken to renovate the football pitch with some shades added to avoid the situation of standing under the very scorching sun to watch football, should he be given the mandate.

Another member, Peter  Tweneboah who is a presidential hopeful of ASSOL, the very department celebrating the week, was spotted. Interacting with him, he demonstrated his quest to make very good use of the week celebration to enable students sell their skills and talents to the outside world. He was of the view that securing a more reliable sponsorship program for the activities of the department shall be his number one priority, should he be voted as the president of the department.

Another candidate Magdalene Kyeremanteng who is a female presidential candidate hopeful for the department was contacted. She touted the efforts of past and current leaders of the association for organising this very important event and promised to improved the activities of the association by working out a master plan to bring corporate institutions onboard for partnership. She also promised of bringing on board exemplary leadership to ensure effective participation by members.

In the soccer competition, level 100 students of English Language Education emerged winners after beating English Level 400, 2:0 in the finals.
The program was peaceful and joyous.

The event also portrayed the languages department as tolerant, peaceful, united and determined. Activities came to a close around 4:00pm. It was a lovely event to watch and many participants confessed that they really enjoyed the program.
